Klaudia Armas has a passion for science and wants to pursue a career in biomedicine. She has worked with some of the top bio-medical scientists in the laboratories at Florida International University and the University of Miami.

Armas can discuss the latest DNA research and seen some of the latest developments on medical research. She hopes to study medicine at Johns Hopkins University.

“I love to study mathematics and science and I want to have a career in medicine,” she said.

A senior at the Medical Academy for Science and Technology (M.A.S.T) at Homestead, she is among a group of very high achieving students.

MAST offers a comprehensive and demanding program that prepares young people to pursue careers in healthcare, medicine and biology. There are very highly regarded academies in the school.

Amirelis Rodriguez is a top student at MAST and a leader on campus. She is president of Interact and cares about her classmates. She is taking a demanding course load of AP classes and hopes to pursue a career in medicine.

“I love the rigor of this school and I enjoy learning about DNA. I also love being active in clubs like Interact and helping others,” she said.

MAST includes several academies that offer very high-level science and mathematics programs. Many of the students who complete these programs say they are very well prepared for high level college programs. The goal is to provide a medical health science high school academy for students seeking careers in health care and science research through a challenging curriculum.

It emphasizes critical thinking, engineering, technology, mathematics, science, field studies, projects, ompetitions, and scientific research, according to information from the school.

The Biomedical Sciences Academy includes courses on cell biology, genetics, disease and other biomedical topics. The program is designed to prepare students for careers in nursing, medicine, pharmaceutical research and technicians.

The iMed Medical Academy offers a sequence of courses that provides rigorous content to prepare pre-med students for advanced college course work. It offers courses in anatomy and physiology, biology, chemistry and physics and the opportunity to work alongside medical professionals at local medical schools and hospitals including Homestead Baptist Hospital.

The Pharmaceutical Sciences Academy is built around the model of understanding the human body to better understand the disease process and the pharmacological interventions used to address the disease process. Students study anatomy and physiology and the disease process of the human system.

The Academy of Physical Therapy focuses on science, research and the latest in the technology related to rehabilitative and restorative services. The students study the human body, chemistry, physics, biomechanics, neuroanatomy, human growth and development, manifestations of disease, examination techniques and therapeutic processes, according to Jean-Rachelle Baril, the principal of MAST.

MAST does not have varsity athletics but students who are interested in competitive athletics can participate on teams at their home school.

MAST students do have a mascot. They are the Sabers.
