The South Dade Senior High School Buccaneer Robotics team earned some recognition at the Space Coast Showdown in Titusville.
The Bucs won the Team Spirit Award and qualified for the playoffs. They competed among 28 teams from around Florida in a FIRST Robotics competition.
It was considered an offseason competition for the Bucs and gave the team a chance to give new drivers and members experience.
“We made it into the playoffs and won some matches. We had to deal with some issues with the robot. The kids diagnosed and repaired the robot and got it back into the competition,” said Shawn Waring, who teaches and coaches robotics.
Waring’s daughter, Scarlett, a ninth grader, participated in the tournament as an operator.
“She was very excited and I was proud to see my daughter competing in the tournament,” said Waring.
The Bucs Robotics team will host a FIRST Robotics competition on October 18 in the school’s gymnasium. Team members will work together to set up the competition.
