The Keys Gate Charter School boys’ lacrosse team made history on March 30, claiming a 6–5 victory over Dillard High School—the first official high school lacrosse win for a Homestead-based program.

The close win marked a milestone for both the young program and the growth of lacrosse in the Homestead area. Several players stood out: sophomore captain Julio Jaramillo led the offense with three goals, junior Kenard Grandison added two, and eighth-grader Sebastian Stanley contributed a goal and three assists. Midfielder Michael Licor, a junior, dominated possession with 14 ground balls, while senior goalkeeper Jayden Davila made 25 saves, keeping the team in the game. Davila, a student at Robert Morgan High School playing his first season with the program, has totaled 157 saves this year.

The defense, anchored by senior captain Da’Marcus Conley, senior Theodore Mompremier, and sophomore Romeo Garcia, held strong during crucial stretches.

The team is coached by Kelvin Justice Jr., who oversees both the boys’ and girls’ programs at Keys Gate Charter. Justice has deep local roots, having played on Homestead Senior High School’s inaugural lacrosse team in 2001 before continuing with the Miami Makos club team. After two seasons of building the program, Justice said the win reflects both the players’ dedication and the surrounding support.

The victory represents not only a milestone for Keys Gate Charter but also a significant moment for lacrosse in the Homestead community.
