Game Time

Miami (4-0) and No. 3 in the AP poll heads up to Tallahassee on Saturday (7:30 p.m., ABC) to face No. 18 Florida State (3-1, 0-1 ACC).

After home wins against Notre Dame, Bethune-Cookman, South Florida and Florida, the Canes will be playing both their first ACC and road game in the 2025 campaign; Miami had last week off.

Florida State suffered a double-overtime loss to Virginia 46-38 in their ACC opener last Friday night.

Miami and FSU have played 68 times and UM has a 36-32 edge. The Canes won last year at Hard Rock Stadium, 36-14. In 2023, the Seminoles won 27-20 at Doak Campbell Stadium.

Canes Corner anticipates a very close game. The oddsmakers have Miami as a less-than-a-touchdown favorite with an over/under in the low fifties. Miami’s offense has been solid this season and only struggled at times against a very strong Florida Gators defense.

Miami’s defense has been exceptional against their first four opponents, but the FSU offense is vastly superior to any they have faced this season. The Noles have a net total offense of 600 yards per game. Dual-threat QB Tommy Castellanos is averaging 9.95 net yards on his 111 plays with 217 on the ground and 848 through the air.

As a team, Florida State has rushed 202 times for 1,398 yards, a 6.7 yards per carry average, and has held opponents to 3.2 yards. The Noles run on 69% of their plays. Miami runs the ball on 54.7% of their plays with a 4.8-yard average and has held opponents to a 2.6-yard average per rush. Miami has 1,080 passing yards in four games, FSU 1,055 in their four.

What will determine who comes out on top? Obviously, winning the turnover battle and avoiding penalties will be crucial. Here at Canes Corner, the belief is that if the Hurricane defense can keep Castellanos from getting outside and contain his scrambling, Miami will prevail. If Castellanos is allowed to extend plays with his legs, anything can happen.

In the Canes’ last game against Florida, Miami held the Gators to 0-for-13 on third down. Third down is where they want FSU. We should all be looking forward to a hard-fought and very entertaining contest on Saturday night.

That’s it for now. Be well all and Go Canes!
