The award-winning South Florida Youth Symphony will open its 62nd season in Homestead this Veterans Day with a free patriotic concert at the Seminole Theatre.

The Veterans Day/America 250 Salute concert is scheduled for Wednesday, Nov. 11 at 5 p.m. at the Seminole Theatre, 18 N. Krome Avenue in Downtown Homestead.

The performance will follow Homestead’s annual Veterans Day Parade and the Homestead Salute Hometown Picnic at Losner Park, creating a full day of activities centered around veterans, families and the community.

The concert is sponsored by the City of Homestead and supported by the Kiwanis Club of Homestead-South Dade.

“This will be a great, patriotic event for the entire Homestead community,” said South Florida Youth Symphony Executive and Music Director Marjory Hahn. “What a tremendous way to kick off our 62nd season.”

The Homestead performance comes after another significant year for the South Florida Youth Symphony.

Earlier this year, the organization’s young musicians earned a Gold Medal during an international competition in Prague, Czech Republic, adding another accomplishment to the program’s long history of developing young performers throughout South Florida.

The South Florida Youth Symphony is one of the longest-running youth music organizations in the United States and has spent decades creating opportunities for young musicians to develop their talents while performing for audiences throughout Miami-Dade County.

The Nov. 11 concert will officially begin a season that includes performances in several communities across the county.

Before the Homestead season opener, the South Florida Youth Symphony will participate in a free pre-season concert on Oct. 3 featuring SFYS musicians, New World School of the Arts students and students from several local schools.

That performance will begin at 5 p.m. at the Chapman Conference Center.

The organization will also hold its annual fundraiser, the “Liberty Gala: 250 Years of American Music,” on Nov. 21 at the Miami Shores Country Club.

The event will honor South Florida Youth Symphony alumnus Daniel Andai, Dean of Music at the New World School of the Arts.

Other performances planned during the season include a holiday concert in Doral, a Valentine’s Day showcase in Coral Gables, additional orchestral performances and a Mother’s Day piano recital.

The season will conclude with a finale concert at Florida International University’s Wertheim Auditorium.

While the organization performs throughout Miami-Dade County, the opening of its 62nd season in Homestead places the community at the center of one of its largest annual celebrations.

The Veterans Day concert will also give families an opportunity to continue the day’s festivities after Homestead’s parade and Hometown Picnic.

The South Florida Youth Symphony program receives support from the Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs, Miami-Dade County Mayor and County Commissioners, The Children’s Trust, Miami-Dade County Office of Management and Budget, the Kirk Foundation, Publix Charities, the Batchelor Foundation and Miami Dade College North Campus.
