The South Florida Youth Symphony’s (SFYSmusic.org) recent live concert at Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden was a rousing success with the community and special invited guests from Keys Gate Charter School in Homestead.
Celebrating its 61st anniversary, the Gold Medal and Emmy Award-winning SFYS attracted a standing-room-only crowd of more than 200 to its performance in Fairchild’s Garden House.
“This was a great event for the students,” said Keys Gate Principal Daniel Verdier. “They had the opportunity to hear these young, talented musicians play a ‘different’ type of music than they’re accustomed to, and the interaction with the musicians after the concert was fantastic. Combine that with a setting like Fairchild, and you have a once-in-a-lifetime, memorable experience.”
The event was sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of Homestead-South Dade, Bob Hilson Roofing and Sheeting, Miami-Dade County, Fairchild, and Miami Dade College North Campus. The Kiwanis and Hilson sponsorships helped underwrite the visit from the Keys Gate students, including hands-on learning sessions with the musicians.
One of the country’s leading youth music organizations, the SFYS performed a ‘Prague Preview’ program at the Fairchild concert. More than 60 musicians, instructors, and chaperones recently flew to Prague, Czech Republic, to perform and compete in the 19th Annual Young Bohemia Prague International Music Festival. The last time the SFYS competed in this competition, in 2019, they won the Gold Medal.
The SFYS program is sponsored with the support of Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs, Miami-Dade County Mayor and County Commissioners, The Children’s Trust, Miami-Dade County Office of Management and Budget, The Kirk Foundation, Publix Charities, and Miami Dade College, North Campus.
