With the primary election decided, South Dade voters can begin preparing for the next round of choices arriving on the Nov. 3 general election ballot.
The general election will include federal, state and local contests, along with any races that advanced from the primary without producing a final winner. Voters in communities including Cutler Bay, Palmetto Bay and Pinecrest may also receive municipal contests based on their home address.
Unlike Florida’s closed partisan primaries, the general election is open to all registered voters. Every voter may choose among the candidates appearing on the ballot, regardless of political party.
Residents who are not currently registered must complete their registration by Oct. 5 to participate. Voters should also use the coming weeks to confirm that their name, residential address and mailing address are current. An outdated address can affect which local races and questions appear on a voter’s ballot.
Those planning to vote by mail must request that a ballot be mailed to them no later than Oct. 22. Florida vote-by-mail requests do not remain active indefinitely, so voters who previously received ballots automatically should verify that a valid request remains on file for November.
The state’s mandatory early-voting period runs from Oct. 24 through Oct. 31, although counties may provide additional early-voting days.
During early voting, Miami-Dade voters may cast a ballot at any designated early-voting location in the county. Anyone waiting until Election Day must report to the precinct assigned to their current address.
Because municipal contests and other local questions vary by address, voters are encouraged to review their individual sample ballot before voting. That provides time to research candidates, constitutional amendments and any local measures without encountering them for the first time inside the voting booth.
Voter registration status, vote-by-mail requests, precinct information and sample ballots can be checked through the Miami-Dade County Elections Department.
The primary settled several contests, but it also established the choices voters will face this fall.
For South Dade residents, the next step is making certain they are registered, informed and ready when voting resumes.
