Lt. Nancy

A Monroe County Sheriff’s Office veteran with more than 40 years of dedicated service has received one of Florida law enforcement’s highest honors.

Sheriff Rick Ramsay recently presented Lt. Nancy Alvarez with the Florida Sheriffs Association Lifetime Achievement Award, recognizing law enforcement professionals who have served at least 40 years, including a minimum of 20 years with a Florida sheriff’s office.

According to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, Alvarez has served with the agency for approximately 40 years and two months. She began her career as a 911 communications specialist while also volunteering as a reserve deputy before graduating from the Basic Law Enforcement Academy and embarking on a distinguished law enforcement career.

Throughout her tenure, Alvarez has held a variety of assignments across the Sheriff’s Office. She has served in Road Patrol, specialized law enforcement operations, Special Operations investigations, and as commander of District 7 in Key Largo. She also worked with the Sheriff’s Office’s South Florida High Intensity Drug Trafficking Areas task force before transitioning into intelligence, where she found what colleagues describe as her passion.

Today, Alvarez oversees the Sheriff’s Office’s Court Security and Civil divisions, bringing decades of leadership and institutional knowledge to the agency.

“Anyone who knows me knows my goal is to keep our community and our officers safe and I love my job, even at three in the morning!” Alvarez said after receiving the award.

Sheriff Ramsay praised both her professionalism and longstanding commitment to public service.

“Lt. Nancy Alvarez and I have worked together many years and our friendship reflects our shared passion for the job,” Ramsay said.

“She is truly deserving of this honor.”

The Lifetime Achievement Award is presented by the Florida Sheriffs Association to recognize exceptional careers marked by longevity, leadership and dedication to serving Florida’s communities. For Alvarez, the recognition caps more than four decades of service protecting residents of Monroe County while mentoring generations of deputies and law enforcement professionals.
