Homestead’s VFW Post 4127 and its Auxiliary hosted their 20th Freedom Walk on Sept. 12 in remembrance of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.
The walk began with a memorial ceremony led by Post 4127 Auxiliary President Jodi Nerney, who served as master of ceremonies.
Remarks were given by State Rep. Kevin Chambliss, Homestead Mayor Steve Losner, VFW State Commander Rudy Cash, VFW State Auxiliary President Kathy Wright, Post 4127 Commander Justin Karalfa and District 5 Commander Ozzy Perez.
Two themes ran throughout the ceremony: honoring those who lost their lives on Sept. 11 and ensuring younger generations continue to learn about the attacks and the Global War on Terror that followed.
The ceremony concluded with the posting of American flags honoring local military members who have died while on active duty since Sept. 11, 2001.
The family of Lance Cpl. Juan Segura, who was killed in Iraq on Nov. 9, 2004, was presented with a Field of Honor Flag certificate.
The Freedom Walk was led by a Sea Cadet Honor Guard and included units from the Homestead Police Department, Miami-Dade Fire Rescue, Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office, Junior ROTC programs, the Everglades Posse Mounted Drill Team and South Florida Trail Riders.
Numerous individual walkers also participated.
A Post official estimated nearly 750 people took part in the event.
The day concluded with lunch and fellowship at VFW Post 4127.
