The Homestead Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) may seek a new developer and possibly a new approach to the Krome Marketplace Development. The CRA board which is also the council met to discuss redevelopment projects before the regular meeting.

Currently, the CRA is working with Society 8 to develop what would become a large food hall within the building that can be enjoyed in a pleasant, upscale environment. But, time has moved on, a new city manager has been hired, and there is a feeling on the CRA that the city may consider another director or developer.

Members of the CRA suggested if Society 8 can’t move faster and come up with a stronger plan, another developer should be considered. Mayor Steven Losner said the CRA should cast a wider net and not be limited to a food hall concept and that if they can’t come up with a best and final offer soon, he would be glad to consider another developer. He believes the CRA and Society 8 are too far apart on how to develop the Krome Marketplace.

Council member Tom Davis said that there is no more money for the city to put into the food hall, and that the CRA might want to look for a better deal. Assistant City Manager Zackery Good said he would continue to meet with Society 8 to see what progress is being made.

The CRA also discussed progress on the Shotgun property. Losner said he does not want a large-scale development there and does not support a 55 and over community. He wants fewer housing units. There is support in the local community for a higher housing density project or a senior-oriented housing community, according to Good.
