Charlotte de Ogburn will present The Fascinating History of Quilting at the Monday November 3rd Bea Peskoe Lunchtime Lecture at noon at the Woman’s Club of Homestead at 17905 SW 292 St. Although most of us think of quilting as a unique American art form originated by pioneer women, it probably originated in Asia thousands of years ago.

The granddaughter of Miami pioneers, Charlotte grew up and went to school in Miami.  Following two years at the University of Miami, Charlotte entered John Hopkins Hospital School of Nursing.  Upon graduation she received a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. She worked as an operating charge nurse at JacksonMemorialHospital and later as charge nurse on a medical unit at UCLA. Charlotte left Los Angeles to join the Air Force supposedly for a two year tour.  Her first duty station was Plattsburg AFB New York. She arrived on a Saturday during a snow storm and a base alert.

Cold weather notwithstanding, she decided that this was the career for her. After challenging assignments around the world and an assignment as Chief Nurse and Command Nurse, Office of the Surgeon United States Air forces Europe she retired.

After retirement, Charlotte became interested in the art of quilting. With a group of St. AndrewsChurch members she creates lap robes made of quilts and crocheted material for our wounded warriors in Afghanistan hospitals.

There will be many quilts, including old ones from the FloridaPioneerMuseum for our audience to see.

The lecture begins at noon. Reservations for a simple $10.00 lunch that begins at 11:30 am can be made by calling Barbara, 305-230-9185 before 2pm on Friday Oct 31.  Or feel free to bring your own lunch.  The Woman’s Club is handicap accessible.

The series is presented with the support of the Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs, the Cultural Affairs Council, the Mayor and the Miami-Dade Board of CountyCommissioners.
