Florida City has received a $1 million dollar grant from the Florida Department of Environmental Protection. The grant money will be used to pay for enhanced flooding prevention elements for phase two of the Florida City Canal Project.

During the December 12th meeting, the Commission authorized matching funds in the amount of $1 million, and approved the selection of EAC Consulting to provide engineering services.

“We will install a new backflow system in the culvert phase two that we are building now to deal with the possibility of sea level rise. This will keep the ocean from backflowing into the culvert and ultimately, Florida City,” said Mayor Otis Wallace.

“It also provides for increased aeration, which provides more oxygen for sea life that enters the culvert. Sealife is free to go in and out of the culvert.” The Commission agreed to a resolution to approve five zoning variances to the RD-1 residential duplex. This includes a planned, detached, single-family home development on a 1.63-acre parcel, located at 750 NW 12th Street.

“They could have built duplexes, but because this area is predominantly a single-family home area, we were able to negotiate more single-family homes with the developer,” said Wallace. “It is good to have homes that are consistent with the neighborhood.”

Note: Because of inclement weather, the Florida City Christmas Parade and Toy Giveaway was rescheduled for Saturday, December 23, beginning at 11:00 a.m.
