For Community Service Aide (CSA) Yajaira Bolaj, the path to law enforcement didn’t begin with a badge — it began with mentorship.

A proud graduate of the Homestead Police Explorers program, Bolaj credits her time under Officer Shanell Wadley’s guidance as the foundation of her career.

“Through it all, Officer Wadley’s upfront and genuine advice in the Police Explorers is what got me here,” she said.

Bolaj joined the Homestead Police Department in 2019 after several years in the Explorers during high school, where she learned the structure, discipline, and community engagement that define the profession. Though she once envisioned herself working in medicine, she realized her calling wasn’t in hospitals but in helping her community directly — through service, presence, and compassion.

“Medicine didn’t feel like the right path,” Bolaj explained. “Law enforcement gives me a way to connect with people and make a real difference every day.”

Her mentor, Officer Wadley — who was featured in a previous community spotlight — remains a guiding influence. Bolaj aspires to follow in her footsteps, leading with empathy and integrity while representing women in a field where their impact, she says, is “different — amazing, even miraculous.”

As a CSA, Bolaj works closely with officers and residents, assisting with essential public safety functions while continuing to grow her knowledge and experience. She also encourages those interested in law enforcement to take advantage of ride-along opportunities.

“It’s the best way to really understand what the job is,” she said. “You see the heart behind the badge.”

Colleagues describe Bolaj as hardworking, determined, and mature beyond her years — “a young lady with a good head on her shoulders.” Her professionalism and positivity have already made her a valued member of the department.

Bolaj’s dedication doesn’t stop there; she’s even been talking with her sister about joining the force.

“The Explorers were a fundamental building block for me,” she said. “Now I want to help others see what’s possible — just like Officer Wadley did for me.”

From student to mentor-in-the-making, Yajaira Bolaj represents the next generation of Homestead’s public servants — a testament to how inspiration, guidance, and determination can turn youthful curiosity into a lifelong commitment to community.
