Costco Groundbreaking

Costco Ground Breaking.

Work has officially begun on the new Costco in South Dade, a development expected to bring significant economic benefits to the community.

On March 30, Miami-Dade Commission Vice-Chair Kionne L. McGhee joined community leaders, project partners, and local residents to celebrate the groundbreaking of the new Costco Wholesale development in South Miami-Dade. The event marks a major investment in a site that has remained vacant for more than 20 years, long a symbol of unrealized potential in the area.

The project, led by McGhee and developed by SG Holdings, covers 17 acres at SW 108th Avenue and SW 190th Street. Once completed, the new Costco is expected to create more than 400 jobs, expand retail access, and stimulate new economic activity in South Dade. Residents of Perrine, Cutler Bay, and surrounding neighborhoods are anticipated to benefit directly from increased access to affordable goods, services, and employment opportunities.

“This long-awaited project has been much needed and today marks a new day for South Dade and the Perrine Community,” said McGhee.

He continued, “I’ve always believed in the power of progress, even when the current runs strong — especially for economically challenged communities that have waited far too long for investment to reach their doors,” said McGhee.

“This will change the trajectory. I will continue to push forward to bring positive, lasting change to District 9, ensuring that deserving families — regardless of their economic circumstances — have access to affordable goods, quality services, and real opportunities to thrive,” said McGhee.

The groundbreaking event also highlighted the collaborative efforts that made the project possible. Local officials praised the partnership between the county, SG Holdings, and community stakeholders, noting that long-term planning and public engagement were key to securing development on the long-vacant site.

Community members at the ceremony expressed optimism about the project’s impact on South Dade, anticipating not only the convenience of a new retail hub but also the broader ripple effect on surrounding businesses and neighborhood growth.

Construction is expected to continue over the next 12 to 18 months, with officials projecting the store will open by late 2027. The development is seen as a milestone for the area, signaling renewed investment and confidence in South Miami-Dade’s growth potential.
