Schools are designed for students to progress steadily from kindergarten through 12th grade.
College, training in the trades and other choices come after and may take place immediately after graduation or be delayed for a while.
Miami-Dade County Public Schools has many programs for high school students through academies and magnet programs, and the popular option of dual enrollment has reached a new milestone.
A recent press release detailed an announcement from School Board Member Roberto J. Alonso that more than 500 students will receive both their high school diplomas and Associate in Arts degrees.
“Seeing hundreds of our students graduate high school with a college degree already in hand is not just an accomplishment, it is a reflection of what is possible when institutions work together with purpose,” said Alonso, vice chair of the Miami Dade College Board of Trustees and school board member for Miami-Dade County Public Schools.
“This is about creating pathways, removing barriers and giving our students a head start on their future.”
Through dual enrollment and early college programs, students across Miami-Dade are able to take college-level coursework while in high school, dramatically reducing the time and cost required to earn a degree. Programs such as the School for Advanced Studies and other dual enrollment initiatives have become national models for how K-12 and higher education can align to deliver meaningful outcomes for students.
“This is what the future of education should look like,” Alonso added.
“A system where students are not confined by traditional timelines, but instead are empowered to move at their own pace, explore opportunities early and graduate ready to lead.”
“I am incredibly excited to see this level of achievement across our community,” Alonso said.
“Congratulations to all of our graduates for this extraordinary accomplishment, and to the teachers, school leaders and staff who guided them every step of the way. To the families, parents and abuelos who supported and believed in these students, this celebration belongs to you as well.”
This milestone underscores a broader vision shared by both institutions: to build a seamless K-20 pipeline that prepares students not just to graduate, but to thrive in a rapidly evolving world.
“As we continue to rethink education, partnerships like this will be critical,” Alonso said.
“Together, we are not just educating students, we are transforming futures.”
Students and parents can speak with school counselors before the end of the school year and can access full details about the program through the Dual Enrollment Handbook.
When Jose L. Dotres became superintendent of schools in 2022, he reiterated the need to ensure students choosing a path in the trades have similar opportunities. Those opportunities are provided through the Technical College system.
The two closest facilities are South Dade Technical College and Robert Morgan Educational Center & Technical College.
South Dade provides dual enrollment in HVAC and refrigeration, residential electrician, patient care assistant, medical assisting and pharmacy technician programs. Robert Morgan offers childcare, HVAC, major appliance, master automotive service technology, digital design, medical assisting, network support services and practical nursing.
Dual enrollment programs require commitment and many extra hours for students. Whether students continue on to a four-year degree or enter a trade, potential results are summarized on the program website.
“According to the U.S. Department of Education, dual enrollment credit earned prior to high school graduation reduces the average time-to-degree and increases the likelihood of graduation for the students who participate in these programs.”
