Seminole Theatre patrons will continue to enjoy performances under the current management for another year.
During the Oct. 22 meeting, the Homestead City Council approved a resolution authorizing an agreement with Oak View Group for the management and operation of the theatre.
The contract is a one-year extension instead of the usual seven years because council members expressed concerns about the theatre’s finances.
Mayor Steven Losner said he believed the contract should be terminated, noting that a presentation by the theatre about its shows was misleading. He said attendance has been low and called for a new approach to managing the facility.
Council member Larry Roth said the city should continue to support the theatre, emphasizing its importance as a cultural resource for Homestead. He added that without an extension, it would be difficult to find another company to manage operations.
Council member Jenifer Bailey also voiced strong support for the theatre, highlighting its cultural contribution to the city.
Under the agreement, the city will pay Oak View Group $100,000 for the theatre’s operation. Council member Tom Davis said he considers the theatre a valuable cultural asset but recommended a review and audit of its finances.
