Zoo Miami is once again home to lions following the passing of its longtime residents, Jabari and Kwame.
Two young male lions, Azizi and Jasiri, arrived on Nov. 6 from the Phoenix Zoo in Arizona, and have completed their initial quarantine period.
Born on June 3, 2024, the brothers are just over a year old and still in the early stages of developing the full manes they will grow into as adults. Male lions can reach nearly 400 pounds and are among the most powerful predators on the African continent.
This week, Azizi and Jasiri were introduced to their new exhibit for the first time. Taking cautious steps, they explored the habitat together, staying close to one another as they investigated the trees, terrain, and enrichment items placed by staff. The brothers eventually climbed a large rock formation affectionately named “Pride Rock” in homage to Disney’s The Lion King.
To enrich their experience, animal science staff provided large bones, which the lions chewed enthusiastically before returning to their holding area for a continued feast and a well-earned nap.
Over the next few weeks, the lions will have periodic access to their exhibit during a “soft opening” period, allowing them to gradually adjust to their new surroundings.
During this transition, they may or may not be visible to guests.
As they grow more comfortable, they will spend more time in the habitat and eventually become part of the zoo’s daily routine.
Azizi and Jasiri represent the foundation of Zoo Miami’s long-term plan to reestablish a pride.
The zoo hopes to bring in female lions in the future as part of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums’ Species Survival Plan, which supports the conservation and management of the species in accredited institutions.
Zoo Miami also contributes to lion conservation in the wild through its conservation fund, which has donated thousands of dollars to help protect lions across Africa.
