Income tax preparation and filing are unpleasant and often daunting tasks for many.

While online options may be practical for some, face-to-face assistance remains necessary for others. Once again, selected free resources from Miami-Dade College (MDC) are available for individuals who earned $67,000 or less in 2025.

A recent MDC press release announced that assistance will begin Feb. 4, 2026, and continue through March 21 at the Homestead Campus and through April 10 at the Kendall Campus. Individuals are encouraged to file as early as possible.

Established in 2007 and made permanent in 2019, the Internal Revenue Service’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program utilizes IRS-certified and trained volunteers who assist individuals in preparing and electronically filing tax returns. Assistance is available in both English and Spanish.

Appointments are preferred, but walk-ins are accepted at the Homestead Campus. The Kendall Campus is by appointment only. Individuals are asked to arrive 15 minutes prior to their scheduled appointment. If filing jointly, both spouses must be present.

Required documentation for all filers includes photo identification; Social Security card or ITIN for taxpayers, spouses, and dependents; birth dates for the primary filer, spouse, and all dependents; wage and earnings statements such as Forms W-2, W-2G, and 1099-R; Health Insurance Marketplace Statement (Form 1095-A), if applicable; Tuition Statement (Form 1098-T); mortgage interest and property tax statements; interest and dividend statements from financial institutions (Forms 1099); a copy of last year’s federal and state tax return, if available; total amount paid for daycare along with the provider’s identifying number; bank routing and account numbers for direct deposit; an IRS-issued IP PIN letter dated January 2026, if applicable; pension withdrawal documentation (Form W-9); and any correspondence received from the IRS.

The Homestead Campus is located at 500 College Terrace in Homestead, Building D, Room D307. Assistance is offered Saturdays only through March 21 from 9 a.m. to noon. The VITA coordinator is Professor Jeanelly Mairena, who can be reached at 305-237-5258.

The Kendall Campus is located at 11011 SW 104th St. in Miami, Building R, Rooms R404 and 408. Assistance is available Mondays and Thursdays through April 10 from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. VITA coordinators are Professors Silvina Barros and Cesar DeCastro, reachable at 305-237-2375.

General public assistance is also once again being offered at the William Dickinson Community Center, located at 43 NE 16th St. in Homestead.

Volunteers are available Tuesdays through April 14, 2026, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Appointments are required and may be made by calling 305-245-4934 or by visiting the Community Center in person.

Tax preparation packets in both English and Spanish are available at the Center and must be completed prior to the appointment. Packets may be picked up during regular hours, Monday through Saturday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Thursdays from 8 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Assistance is available in both English and Spanish.
