Sometimes the best food finds are the ones you are not even expecting to take home.
I first came across Craave House while attending Sunset Eats in Palmetto Bay, where the local sourdough baker was among the food vendors serving the crowd. I left with a loaf of jalapeño and cheddar sourdough, and after getting it home, there was really only one reasonable thing to do: start experimenting.
The result was a jalapeño-and-cheddar sourdough toast topped with grape jam.
Yes, grape jam.
And yes, it worked.
The bread itself was excellent. The sourdough had that satisfying chew you want from a good loaf, while the jalapeño and cheddar gave it enough savory flavor to make it interesting without completely taking over. Once toasted, the outside crisped beautifully while the inside stayed soft, making it the perfect base for something sweet.
Adding grape jam brought everything together in a way I honestly was not expecting. The sweetness played against the cheddar, while the jalapeño added just enough heat to keep every bite interesting.
The finished toast was simply amazing.
What also stood out about Craave House was the attention paid to everything surrounding the product. The service at Sunset Eats was friendly and welcoming, and even the packaging felt thoughtfully put together. It gave the bread the kind of presentation that makes you excited to bring it home rather than treating it like something you just tossed into a bag at the end of the night.
That matters, especially at community markets and food events where dozens of vendors may be competing for your attention. The small details are often what make one booth stick in your memory.
Craave House managed to do that before I even toasted the first slice.
Then the bread hit the toaster, the grape jam came out, and things got serious.
If there is one downside, it is that discovering a good loaf of sourdough tends to create a dangerous amount of confidence in the kitchen. Suddenly every combination starts sounding reasonable.
For now, though, I am standing firmly behind jalapeño, cheddar and grape jam.
Do with that information what you will.
