Culture, courage and community came together Sept. 25 as MUJER, Inc. hosted its Colors of Courage Fiesta Fundraiser at The Healing Sanctuary in Homestead.
The event welcomed approximately 130 attendees for an evening celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month while raising support for survivors of domestic violence and sexual abuse.
MUJER Executive Director Susan Rubio Rivera opened the evening alongside Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava, who spoke about the organization’s role in the community and the importance of helping survivors rebuild their lives.
The theme of resilience continued throughout the evening with live mariachi music and a Monigotes performance featuring music associated with Selena Quintanilla. Guests arrived in traditional fiesta attire and voted for the evening’s best traditional Mexican dress.
Behind the celebration was a reminder of the work MUJER performs throughout the year.
For nearly 30 years, the Homestead-based organization has provided free, culturally responsive services to survivors of domestic violence and sexual abuse throughout South Miami-Dade.
MUJER says organizations providing survivor services continue to face funding challenges while some residents may also encounter cultural, language or immigration-related concerns that can make seeking assistance more difficult.
The organization works to ensure survivors know that support and resources remain available to them regardless of their background or circumstances.
Colors of Courage used Hispanic Heritage Month as an opportunity to celebrate the traditions, strength and resilience of South Florida’s Hispanic community while drawing attention to the importance of maintaining accessible support services.
Funds raised during the event will support MUJER’s free services and its mission of helping survivors move from crisis toward healing, independence and leadership.
The fundraiser also comes ahead of Give Miami Day on Nov. 19, when nonprofits throughout Miami-Dade County participate in the annual community-wide fundraising campaign.
MUJER encourages residents interested in its work to learn more about the organization and the services available to survivors throughout South Miami-Dade.
