Carina Sagredo Palmer Trinity Lacrosse

Carina Sagredo celebrates a Palmer Trinity goal this past season.

Palmer Trinity girls lacrosse head coach Joffre Salazar released a statement Friday exclusively to the South Dade News Leader in response to the FHSAA's new rule requiring girls lacrosse players to wear helmets.

In his statement, Salazar said "Player safety is our paramount concern. However, I disagree with the new mandatory rule."

He continued "Many other coaches would agree this will only invite more rough play, not prevent it.  If these experimental 'helmets' were proven to prevent concussion injuries than I would wholeheartedly support the ruling.  In this case, the additional equipment would only serve to give players a false sense of security.  Girls’ lacrosse is a no-contact sport. Therefore, our attention should be focused on enforcing the ruling on the field ."

Palmer Trinity Playoffs

Palmer Trinity's girls lacrosse team made a deep run in the 2014 FHSAA playoffs.

This response comes after Coral Shores' director of lacrosse Mark Hall called the new ruling "totally misguided, short-sighted, and ill-informed" in a letter to the FHSAA Board of Directors.
