The Homestead Senior High School football team had a great run, but unfortunately lost to St. Thomas Aquinas, 31 to 28, in the 3M state championship game.
The Broncos earned a 12-2 record and appeared in the state championship for the second consecutive time. The game was played in Tallahassee.
“We did not capitalize on some opportunities, and we chose not to kick a field goal. We had opportunities to score that we missed. You can’t do that against a team that has won five consecutive state championships. Our kids played their tails off and we had very good fan support. We did everything we could do to win,” said Athletic Director Curtis Brown.
The Broncos came close to pulling off an upset win. They were down 17-0 late in the third quarter. In just a short time, quarterback Joshua Townsend threw two touchdown passes to Isaac Brown, and one to Kevin Cascuda. He ran in one touchdown.
Rather than attempting a field goal late in the fourth quarter that could have tied the game, Homestead ran an offensive play on the fourth down on about the ten-yard line. But Townsend was sacked. Townsend scored his one rushing touchdown late in the game. It was not enough to get the win.
“Cortez Mills played well and had over 100 yards rushing. Our defense played well against some very good St. Thomas players,” said Brown. Competitive athletes hate to lose, but Homestead has a lot to be proud of.
The Broncos came into the game ranked 44th in the nation, and competed well against a team that is not only in the top ten, but has many players being recruited by top division colleges.
Isaac Brown has committed to Louisville but is being pursued by other top college teams. Cortez Mills has committed to the University of Miami. Joshua Townsend has received some interest from FAMU and Presbyterian, but may be too small to get as much interest from division one programs. Other players are also receiving interest.
Even though some Homestead players are graduating, younger players are interested in joining the Broncos. “We have a winning team and there are good players who want to be part of our team. It is fun to play at Harris Field,” said Brown. “We almost always win there and we have good fan support.”
Spring training is coming up and the Broncos are looking forward to a great next season.
