The Homestead Senior High School football team is getting ready for the fall season. The Broncos lost 30 seniors who led the team to two state championship games, but they have some top-notch players returning.
Malachi Lewis is the starting quarterback. He is 6.4 and 210 pounds. “He is a senior who has committed to Youngstown State next year. It is great that he has an offer,” said Homestead athletic director Curtis Brown.
Cortez Mills is another highly regarded player. He is a two-time All-Miami-Dade winner and is considered a four-star wide receiver. Mills has committed to the University of Oklahoma, one of the top college football programs in the nation. The team is coached by Ronnie Thornton, who led the Broncos last year.
During the 2023 campaign, the Broncos had a 12-2 record and appeared in the 3M state championship game. They lost the championship to St. Thomas Aquinas, 31-28.
“We have some talented younger players,” said Brown. The Broncos will start the season with some stiff competition. The season will begin on August 17th at 10:30 a.m. with a game against Cardinal Newman at Traz Powell Stadium.
Next will be powerhouse Palmetto on August 23rd, followed by cross-town rival South Dade on August 30th. In September, they will face a strong Vero Beach team. The Broncos play their home games at Harris Field. This team loves tough competition, and have a tradition for high-quality football.
