Heading into their season opener against Ransom Everglades, Palmer Trinity was hoping their pre-season matchup would provide with some positive momentum.
Their 17-13 loss to Canterbury may end up doing the opposite.
Playing on the road, the defending FIFC runners-up are looking to start their year off with a signature win this weekend in the Battle of the Oar.
Having not one the matchup in quite some time, the Falcons enter this weekend's game as the favorites for a change.
Head coach Rudy Fernandez told the News Leader during fall practice that the Battle of the Oar was the most important game on the schedule for Palmer Trinity, and the Falcons will now look to turn around their luck after falling in their preseason game.
Coral Reef Victorious
In a game that saw low scoring and high drama, the new look Coral Reef football team defeated Pace 14-7.
MehkiErvan opened the scoring for Coral Reef with a touchdown run from two yards out just past halfway in the second quarter.
The Barracudas cemented their victory in the early stages of the second half when cornerback K'Toney Hill intercepted a Pace pass, returning it 45 yards for a touchdown.
Pace scored on a one yard rush with less than two minutes left in the contest, proving too little too late.
The victory gives head coach Javier Valdes the perfect start to his tenure as head varsity coach at Coral Reef.
CoralShores Dominates
CoralShores proved that their brand new offense is a force to be reckoned with thanks to a crushing 55-0 win over St. John Neumann in their preseason Kickoff Classic matchup.
However, the game was not without its quirks.
Just as the Hurricanes were returning to the field after halftime, leading 34-0, the sprinkler system at the stadium turned on, dousing the field in water.
The unexpected change in field conditions did little to slow down CoralShores, however, as quarterback Fralon Warren led his team to victory.
In the second half, Warren guided the Hurricanes on a seven play, 50 yard drive to the endzone, running the ball in himself from three yards out.
CoralShores finished the game having scored on seven of their first eight drives in the game.
Warren finished going 6-for-10 with 52 yards and two touchdowns while running for another.
Nick Frisone, a former quarterback, hauled in one of Warren's touchdowns, with the other going to Jay Kubida.
Frisone also scored on the ground, helping lead the runners to a 300 yard game on the ground, started by Frisone's opening touchdown run.
The balance of the running came from Logan Couty (92 yards on eight carries for two twouchdowns), Jack Machesic (49 yards on four carries), Tanaris Walker (48 yards on four carries), and JahsiahBennet (20 yards).
HomesteadFalls
Homestead's youth shone brightly during their Kickoff Classic matchup, falling 17-13 to Everglades on the road.
After an offseason fraught with rumor and questions of the team's ability to survive, the Broncos had hoped to grab a win in Broward against the Gators, but were unable to garner enough offense to secure a positive result.
Homestead now will turn to their season-opener tonight against Ferguson at Harris Field to get the regular season started with a win.
Everglades Prep Shocks Ransom
Playing against a more established team, Everglades Prep turned many heads in attendance with a thrilling 14-10 win over Ransom Everglades in their Kickoff Classic football game.
Kavon Holmes got the Panthers faithful going with a 67 yard touchdown catch to open the scoring.
Chris Hernandez followed that up with a 50 yard touchdown reception of his own to increase the lead and give the Panthers the victory.
Everglades Prep will now move on to their season opener Saturday night against Keys Gate at Harris Field.
