Miami Community Charter thundered their way to a dominant 45-0 victory over Pinecrest Prep in their spring football game, setting a high standard for their upcoming season.
After going through their inaugural season with just one victory, the Lions showed that they are a team that has greatly improved over last season’s disappointments.
“What a game,” exclaimed a jubilant head athletic director Hansel Alfonso. “These guys should be so proud of what they have done today. This is a great moment for this program.”
The game started out with a perfect drive, capped off by a Jose Osorio touchdown to give the Lions a 6-0 lead in the first quarter.
Pinecrest Prep’s ensuing possession ended on the first play as the ball was fumbled and picked up by Michael Brown Ogletree in the endzone, giving the Lions another touchdown.
After quarterback Ashante Applebe found Ogletree in the endzone for a two point conversion, the Lions struck again just minutes later, with Applebe intercepting an errant pass and then running in a touchdown on the next play.
Osorio would score again in the second quarter, followed by a safety for the Miami Community Charter defense thanks to a sack by Chris Cortes.
The Lions would open the second half with a thunderous 77-yard touchdown run by Osorio.
Applebe would connect with Ogletree again for a touchdown in the third quarter, and then add a field goal late in the fourth quarter from Cortes to finish out the scoring.App
For many observers, the tandem duo of Applebe and Ogletree looked to be a bright spot for the upcoming season.
“They played so hard for this game, and the worked together,” said head coach Don March after the win. “These boys deserved this win.”
Coral Reef Topples Edison
Under first-year head coach Javi Valdes, Coral Reef finished their spring game with a strong 14-7 victory at Harris Field.
Led by the power of a young offense and a talented defense, Coral Reef jumped out to an early 7-0 lead in the first half thanks to a touchdown by Jordan Donaldson.
Quarterback Keith Anderson was strong, completing several passes while making clean handoffs to his running backs.
Another touchdown in the second half by Harvey Clayton put Coral Reef ahead for good.
South Dade Upset On The Road
Despite stating that their final score was not of the upmost importance, South Dade nonetheless left their game against Coconut Creek feeling the sting of their 21-14 loss.
The Buccaneers got out to an early lead thanks to a thundering 6-yard touchdown run by Jawon Hamilton in the first quarter.
The Bucs then extended their lead when Darnell Durham hauled in a touchdown pass late in the second quarter.
Coconut Creek finally responded with seconds left in the half to enter the lockers trailing by just one score.
Just minutes into the third quarter, South Dade saw Coconut Creek score once again to tie the game.
The final score came with just 26 seconds left on the clock in the third quarter, and it put Coconut Creek ahead for good in the game.
Coral Shores Outlasts Keys Gate
It was a game of two teams with big plans for the fall, and it saw a thrilling finish to match the billing.
In the end, CoralShores defeated Keys Gate Charter in a 21-18 result.
The victory for the Hurricanes came with just moments to spare as Eddie Evans connected with Austin Seabolt in the endzone with 15.4 seconds left on the game clock.
The score topped off a back and forth affair that saw both teams shine.
“Of all my years coaching, that was one of the most fun games I have been a part of,” said CoralShores head coach Ed Holly after the win. “Both teams played their hearts out. My hats off to Keys Gate. They have a great team over there.”
Keys Gate saw themselves jump ahead twice in the game, and both times CoralShores stormed back.
On defense, the Hurricanes were led by senior Ariel Correa, who also led the offense with 131 yards rushing and two touchdowns.
Keys Gate was undone by four turnovers in the game, with CoralShores’ Josh Holper picking off two passes while teammate Cameron Couty grabbed another.
The Knights got on the board first with a 82-yard interception return in the first quarter.
“It was an errant pass that was the product of early-game rust,” laughed CoralShores head coach Ed Holly. “You expect these sort of things during the spring.”
Everglades Prep Falls Late
Everglades Prep’s spring game against Hillel came down to the wire, and the result didn’t go the way of the Panthers.
In a 8-6 defeat, Everglades Prep was undone by special teams play, but showed signs of marked improvement.
Sergio Gomez scored the lone touchdown for the Panthers, but the ensuing two-point conversion failed.
On defense, Garbiel Pena tallied an interception, as did teammate Tommy Benevidies.
“We showed we are tough despite the result,” said head coach Ryan Nani after the game. “Our defense came up big at times and got to the quarterback well.”
That defense was led by linemen Elias Burgos and Moses Benevidies, both of whom registered sacks in the game.
By far the breakout star was Kavon Holes, a star underclassmen who led the offense in both running and receiving.
