Southridge Spartans

Despite giving up their first points to an opponent since September, Miami Southridge continued their march towards a state title with a 28-10 win over Coral Gables in the FHSAA Region 4-8A Finals.

Southridge will now play in their first state semifinal since 1999 when they travel tonight to Deerfield Beach.

While their defense was once again stellar, Southridge unleashed their ground attack to take the win.

Southridge scored first in the opening quarter when quarterback Antwan Collier found Daquris Wiggins in the end zone for a 15-yard touchdown.

On the next drive, Coral Gables blocked a Southridge punt to set themselves up just 11 yards from the end zone.

Southridge's dominant defense held the Cavaliers to just a field goal and set the tone for the rest of the contest.

Kemore Gamble was next to score, busting the game open in the third quarter with a 18-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Micheal Cox.

Next, Bentavious Thompson tore off a 69 yard touchdown run to pull the Spartans even further ahead, rushing into the endzone en route to a 104-yard rushing performance.

Coral Gables scored in the fourth quarter to pull within 12 points, but Southridge struck back thanks to a touchdown from Courtney Reese on a 27-yard touchdown run.

Reese would finish with 53 yards on 16 carries while Collier added 63 yards on 11 carries.
