Two upcoming District 16-8A football matchups have seen time changes announced this week, and both involve Homestead High School.
The Broncos’ matchup tonight against Miami Killian at Harris Field was previously scheduled for a 7:30pm kickoff, but it was announced Tuesday that the game would begin at 4pm.
In addition, the annual Centennial Cup game between Homestead and South Dade, previously schedule for October 30 7:30pm at Harris Field is now scheduled for a 3pm kickoff as well.
Rumors on social media began to swirl that the schedule changes were due to the recent string of violence that resulted in the deaths or injuries of several South Dade students.
A request for comment from Homestead’s athletic department regarding a possible connection between the crimes and the change in schedule was met with a “no comment” response, however a source close to the situation says the time change was made to “be safe” and to “err on the side of caution” in light of recent events.
A phone call to Miami-Dade Public Schools requesting further comment had not been returned at press time.
Regarding the Centennial Cup kickoff change, violence was not mentioned as the reason behind the altered timetable.
“That Friday [October 30] is an early release day for [Homestead High],” said Broncos Athletic Director Nick Newbury. “We want our teachers and staff to be able to go to the ballgame, and we didn’t feel the schedule allowed them to do that if they had to go all the way home and then come back as opposed to being able to leave school and head straight to Harris Field.”
