Local track and field stars got off to a hot start this week with several impressive records being broken.

  The first of those was Westminster Christian, who has already seen numerous school records fall so far this season.

  Amy Creus broke two records, one in the 100m race, and the other in the 200m race.

  Julia Decker set a new record in the 300m hurdles, the teamed with Creus, Lanear Williams, and Este Jimenez to set a new 4x100m relay record.

  Jiminez teamed with Sofia Jimenez, Isabel De Allende Silva, and Natasha Strump to break the old 4x400m relay record as well.

  On the boys side, George Williams has had an impressive year, breaking the old 400m race record.

  Perhaps the most notable fact of Este Jimenez and Isabel De Allende Silva’s records is that they are still middle-schoolers, having broken a combined six middle-school records for the program this season as well.

Palmer Trinity Excels

  Palmer Trinity’s track and field squad showed their mettle at two recent meets.

  First, the Dade Christian Crusaders Invitational Meet showcased the talents of Sofia Iglesias as she captured a win in the discus throw and a third place in the shot put.

  Janelle Gonzalez broke a school record with her fourth place finish in the 1600m race, while Kristen Fernandez in the same race.

  Autumn Jade Stoner placed fourth in the pole vault to improve on her strong season.

  Marcus Kyle set a personal best in the boys shot put competition, as did Guillermo Bonet in the 400m race.

  Bonet teamed with Tyler Farais, Matthew Scullin, and Duncan Stoner to finish seventh in the 4x800m relay.

  The Belen Dual Meet saw further success for the Falcons on the field.

 Kristen Fernandez set a school ecord I the 1600m race while Bianca Lang set a personal best in the 100m hurdles.

  Marcus Kyle set another personal best, this time in the boys discus throw.

Coral Reef Shines At FSU Relays

  Carlin Berryhill has long been widely regarded as one of the strongest distance runners in Miami-Dade County, and his performance in the FSU Relays further cemented that.

  Racing against some of the best in the state, Berryhill took gold in the boys 1,600m race.

  Dervin Moultrie finished an impressive fourth in the boys 3,200m race to help propel Coral Reef to a second place overall team finish.

South Dade, Southridge Grab Miramar Relays Victories

  South Dade and district rival Southridge entered the Miramar Relays looking to make sure everyone knew they still were contenders, and several athletes claimed victories that they hope will help that cause.

  South Dade got started with a win from DiCaria Alvarez in the pole vault, followed by a third place finish in the girls 800m relay.

  South Dade also finished second in the girls 1,600m sprint relay, securing a third place overall team finish at the meet.

  Southridge’s success came thanks to victories in the 1,600m and 3,200m races by Ciara Golliher.

Palmer Lacrosse Secures Playoff Spot

  The Falcons’ boys lacrosse team entered their game against Killian needing a win to secure a spot in the District 32 playoffs.

  Their final result was more than satisfactory.

  Palmer Trinity utilized its balanced offensive attack to overwhelm Killian in a 14-9 win to lock up the final opening in the hunt for the district title.

  The tournament will be held next week at Westminster Christian.

Westminster Boys Volleyball Wins

  Westminster Christian’s boys volleyball team has had a difficult run of their season to date, but their match against Monsignor Pace provided the perfect opportunity for a morale boost.

  The Warriors defeated Pace in a 4-set thriller to send the home crowd home smiling.

  After winning the first two sets 25-22 and 26-24, the Warriors could only watch as Pace thundered back for a 16-25 win in the third set.

  Westminster put the game away with a 25-21 fifth set victory to secure the win.

Keys Gate Flag Football Falls

  Keys Gate’s girls flag football team were humbled at home with a crushing 20-0 defeat at the hands of Hebrew Academy.

  Sabrina Abramowitz decimated the Lady Knights’ defense with 260 passing yards and three touchdowns.

  Florencia Chami hauled in two of those touchdowns and added 200 yards receiving and two interceptions on defense to help put Keys Gate away.
