FHSAA took further steps towards the major realignment of sports teams this week, announcing both the preliminary assignments for soccer and the final classifications for basketball and girls volleyball.
Boys Soccer
Boys soccer includes three local teams starting off as independents, with Colonial Christian exiting district play, while newcomers Somerset Silver Palms and Palm Glades Prep joining the Patriots.
District 16-1A includes two teams, with Palmer Trinity joining first-time district participants Miami Community Charter.
They will be joined by Marathon, Archbishop Carroll, and Riviera Prep.
District 16-2A features Coral Shores, Everglades Prep, Westminster Christian, and Keys Gate joining the likes of Pinecrest Prep, Gulliver, Florida Christian, Key West, and St. Brendan.
District 16-4A features two newcomers to the mix with Homestead and Southridge facing Belen, Doral, Mater Academy, Reagan, Sunset, and TERRA.
District 16-5A includes Coral Reef, South Dade, Killian, Varela, Southwest Miami, Braddock, Palmetto, and Ferguson.
Girls Soccer
Girls soccer’s lineup is much like the boys, with a few subtle changes.
Palm Glades Prep and Somerset Silver Palms will start off as independent teams.
District 16-1A includes Palmer Trinity, Miami Community Charter, Marathon, Island Christian, Archbishop Carroll, and Riviera Prep.
District 16-2A features Coral Shores, Keys Gate, and Westminster Christian joining Key West, Gulliver, St. Brendan, Pinecrest Prep, and Carrollton.
District 16-4A pits Homestead and Southridge against Doral, Mater Academy, Sunset, Reagan, and TERRA.
District 16-5A features Coral Reef, South Dade, Ferguson, Varela, Braddock, Killian, Palmetto, and Southwest.
Appeals Planned
As with the previous announced realignments, both Homestead and Southridge are planning appeals of their placement.
Southridge athletic director Shawn Carney says the inclusion of the Spartans in the districts with local teams is important for fans and the community.
“We will be appealing to move back up to where we are expected to be,” said Carney. “We want to play on the same level as our local rivals and that is key for our teams. It’s also good for the neighborhood to see us play against our other local teams who quite frankly want us to be there too.”
Boys Basketball
FHSAA announced the final district alignments for boys basketball, and it features a few changes.
Independent teams will include Coral Shores and Colonial Christian.
District 16-2A will feature Princeton Christian and Redland Christian taking on Schoolhouse Prep, Calusa Prep, Island Christian, and Westwood Christian.
District 16-3A will pit Palmer Trinity, Everglades Prep, Somerset Silver Palms, and Miami Community Charter against Marathon in an almost exclusively local district.
District 16-4A will feature Keys Gate and Westminster Christian taking on Key West, Gulliver, Ransom Everglades, Pinecrest Prep, and St. Brendan.
District 16-8A will feature Coral Reef and South Dade joining Southridge and Homestead (who’s appeals to move up were approved) taking on Varela, Killian, and Palmetto.
Girls Basketball
The final alignment for girls basketball in South Florida features some changes from the proposed listing earlier in the year as well.
District 16-2A features Redland Christian and Princeton Christian taking on Calusa Prep, Schoolhouse Prep, and Island Christian.
District 16-3A pits Everglades Prep, Miami Community Charter, and Palmer Trinity against Marathon.
Districy 16-4A includes Keys Gate, Westminster Christian, Key West, Carrollton, Gulliver, Pinecrest Prep, St. Brendan, and Ransom Everglades.
Finally, District 16-8A adds Homestead and Southridge (via approved appeals) to the district with South Dade, Coral Reef, Varela, Palmetto, and Killian.
Girls Volleyball
Girls volleyball will feature some strong districts in the final classifications, with Somerset Silver Palms being the only independent team locally.
District 16-2A starts with Colonial Christian, Redland Christian, Princeton Christian, Westwood Christian, Calusa Prep, and Island Christian.
District 16-3A features Everglades Prep, Miami Community Charter, Palmer Trinity, and Marathon.
In District 16-4A, Coral Shores, Keys Gate, and Westminster Christian join Key West, Carrollton, Gulliver, Ransom Everglades, St. Brendan, and Pinecrest Prep.
Finally, District 16-8A features South Dade, Coral Reef, Southridge, Homestead, Varela, Killian, and Palmetto.
