On the challenging road course of Homestead-Miami Speedway, the 2016 FARA Sunset 500 featured a dominating performance from an exotic racecar’s first taste of American soil.
Teammates Sam Tawfik and Danny Von Dongen of Powersport Racing piloted their brand new Ligier JS P3 LMP prototype to a one-lap victory over William Hubbell and Eric Curran’s Corvette Daytona Prototype in FARA’s annual day-to-night endurance race.
For the first hour of the race, the lead seemingly changed hands between the two leading powerhouses in the field on a lap-by-lap basis.
However, once pit stops began, the Ligier began to build a lead it would not relinquish both overall and in the FP-1 class.
In MP-1A, Eric Johnson and Ernie Francis Jr. had looked to return to victory lane in their ANSA Motorsports Audi R8, but electrical issues struck midway through the race, forcing them to retire.
One teammates misfortune lead to victory for the sister ANSA R8 team of Chris Fountas and Angel Benitez Jr.
The Reiter Engineering-built Lamborghini Gallardo of Allan Hellmeister, Adalberto Baptisto, and Sergio Lagana showed pace through much of the race, but power troubles late in the four hour race doomed them to a nigh spent in the paddock while the checkered flag flew.
Shane Lewis and Guillermo Fernandez piloted their Porsche to third place overall and first in MP-2A while MP-1B was led by Paulo Lima, Adam Yunis, and John Estupinan’s Porsche.
Carlos Grimaldos and Camilo Rico led the way to victory in MP-3A, Drew Altman, Ethan Low, and Adolpho Rossi captured MP-4A in their Ginetta, and Herbert Gomez, Bryan Ortiz, Jose De Miguel, and Angel Clemente teamed up to win MP-4C, the third straight class win in the event for Gomez.
Perhaps the most spirited performance of the night was that of MP-4B winner Bryan Horowitz who piloted his Scuderia Shell Burbank Mazda Miata from dead last at the drop of the green flag to first place with an eight-lap margin of victory in his class, all without swapping drivers during the race.
MP-3B was a showcase of team dominance, as TR3 Performance supplanted TLM Racing as the team to beat in the lower classes, placing all three Scion teams on the top three podium positions in class.
Hubbell Captures Sprint Victory
William Hubbell and Eric Curran teamed up to win the FARA Sunset 500 sprint races at Homestead-Miami Speedway on Sunday afternoon, making up for their second place finish both overall and in FP-1 class the previous night.
Ernie Francis Jr. returned to victory, this time in MP-1B class with Adam Yunis and John Estupinan in their Porsche.
Adam Kreysar captured MP-1A victory in his Breathless Performance Aston Martin while Sebastian Carazo and Bryan Ortiz teamed up for the win in MP-2B.
MP-2A was dominated by Warren Cooper and Franck Silah’s Porsche, followed by Rodrigo Ospina’s MP-4A winning drive.
TR3 Performance once again swept the podium in MP-3B, Ricardo Juncos piloted his Mazda Miata to MP-4B victory, and Juan Paulino teamed with Rafael Rosario to win MP-4C.
