Robert Olson, 42, owner of South of Reality Charters, faces up to 10 years in a federal prison on charges related to a July 30 arrest in the Florida Keys. Olson, a convicted felon, was detained by the US Coast Guard this summer when a Coast Guardsman found guns and ammo on board during a routine recreational safety check of Olson’s sailboat “Freebird.”
The Coast Guardsman found a Ruger 9mm pistol, a Mosin-Nugent 7.62mm rifle, nine rounds of 9mm ammo, 204 rounds of 7.62mm ammo, and 83 rounds of .22 caliber ammo on board.
Olson stated he did not have access to the lockbox where the guns and ammo were found, but a key to the lockbox was found inside the ship’s cabin.
After the ship was towed back to Station Islamorada, police officer’s used a drug-sniffing dog to find nine plastic bags of cocaine in the wallet of Ilias Angelis, 23, a passenger on the sailboat.
Angelis was arrested and plead not guilty on drug charges with the intent to sell.
Olson faces up to 10 years in a federal prison after he was indicted by a federal grand jury and arrested on October 3.
Olson was arraigned in Key West, pleading not guilty, and was placed on $50,000 bond.
