SARASOTA, Fla. -- A satellite tracker on a 14-foot great white shark shows that she is lurking off the coast of Sarasota County.

The shark they have named Katharine was last picked up by satellites on Sunday morning approximately 50 miles off Venice, following a recent jaunt to the north off the Florida panhandle.

The female shark weighs more than 2,300 pounds. She was tagged last August off Cape Cod, Massachusetts. Researchers with Ocearch have been tracking her movements ever since.

“Here in July, she is in the Gulf of Mexico, and right now she's about 50 nautical miles off of Venice and she’s moving in towards the coastline. But she's is still a pretty long ways away,” says Dr. Robert Hueter of Mote Marine Laboratory.

You can follow Katharine's track, and those of dozens of other sharks around the world, at ocearch.org.
