MANATEE COUNTY, Fla. -- Three Ohio boys will go home with the fish story of a lifetime. They caught a 692-pound shortfin mako shark this week.
The boys were on a charter trip with family aboard the Double Nickel. They were fishing about 20 miles offshore of Longboat Pass in 100 feet of water using amberjack as bait.
Captain Nicholas Froelich of the Double Nickel tells ABC 7 he has fished with this family for years. "Sam, the 12-year-old that caught the shark, he asked if there were any makos around, and we told him it was a little late in the season. It’s been a cold year and we were in luck and there happened to be one there. We were using fifteen to twenty pound live amberjacks, ya know. It was a cooperative shark, some of them you will fight 3, 4, 5 hours. It can go either way to say the least."
They weighed the shark at Cortez Bait & Seafood at the Cortez fishing village. Sam and his friends kept some of the meat for themselves. The rest was given away.
