NORTH PORT, Fla. -- Why did the alligator cross the road? We don't know, but at least it was courteous enough to use the pedestrian crosswalk when it did.

Daryl Drake sent us this picture he says he took Wednesday morning in North Port.

The gator was walking across La France Avenue near Sumter Boulevard, likely to get to the retention pond across the way.

American alligators are protected by federal law, and are generally only allowed to be removed by licensed trappers if they are over 4 feet long and deemed a threat to people, pets, or property.

Florida has an estimated 1.3 million alligators in all 67 counties.

Anyone with concerns about an alligator may call the FWC's Nuisance Alligator Hotline at 866-FWC-GATOR.
