Proms aren’t just for high school students — they can be for senior residents too.
During its recent meeting, the Homestead City Council approved a resolution to establish a senior prom for residents of the city. The event will be co-sponsored by the City of Homestead in partnership with the Office of Miami-Dade County Commissioner Kionne L. McGhee, District 9, and is designed to provide senior residents with a meaningful social and recreational experience.
The Senior Prom is scheduled for June 12 at the Phichol Williams Community Center.
Programming and event operations will be coordinated by the County Commissioner’s Office in collaboration with the city manager. The resolution authorizes up to $10,000 from the city’s “Other Events” account within the Special Events Budget to support the co-sponsorship and implementation of the event if outside sponsorship funding is unavailable.
The prom aims to encourage social engagement among older residents, many of whom may experience isolation or limited opportunities for community interaction. Organizers hope the event will give seniors a chance to reconnect with friends, meet new people, and celebrate life in a festive, welcoming environment.
City officials describe the prom as more than a dance — it is intended as a celebration of the lives, achievements, and contributions of Homestead’s senior population. Attendees can expect music, dancing, refreshments, and a chance to enjoy the nostalgic fun of a traditional prom, tailored for the city’s older residents.
“This event is an opportunity to bring joy, laughter, and a sense of community to our seniors,” said a city representative. “We want our older residents to know they are valued, celebrated, and included in the life of Homestead.”
With the Senior Prom, Homestead joins a growing number of municipalities nationwide recognizing the importance of recreational and social programs for older adults, highlighting the city’s commitment to quality of life for residents of all ages.
