The Homestead Rotary Club, now in its 101st year of service to the community, partnered with Homestead Miami Speedway to celebrate their newest scholarship recipients on Wednesday 27 May.
This year the Rotary club is providing 42 area students with $2500 each to further their college studies. Club President Elect Edgar Moscoso told the News Leader that there were 125 applicants and that the scholarship committee worked hard to determine the most qualified.
The Club was able to provide $105,000.00 in scholarships based on the hard work of its members in fund raising, principally the Homestead Stone Crab and Seafood Festival. One of the recipients, Norah Laurent told us, “This scholarship means everything will be better for me over my next year.” Norah, who graduated from the School for Advanced Studies in Homestead is studying at Boston College and plans to become a physical therapist.
Florida City Mayor Charlotte Thompson joined Rotarian Julio Guzman in providing inspiring remarks to the scholarship winners and their families. The winners, most of whom were present, were individually recognized and presented with a certificate. They, along with their family members, were then treated to the opportunity to take three laps around the 1.5-mile speedway in their personal vehicles.
