The Florida City Commission did not meet on April 8th because members of the commission traveled to Tallahassee to visit legislators and share their concerns about the laws that affect southern Miami-Dade. Mayor Otis Wallace will attend the National Conference of Public Administrators in San Francisco.

One concern that Wallace and other city leaders have involves the immigrants who are engaged in farm work. He wants to share his concerns about the importance of immigrants to local farms.

“The immigrants are very important to our farm economy. Many are from Mexico and are doing work that many people don’t want to do,” said Wallace.

He said there have not been raids on farms in the area, but he knows they have occurred elsewhere.

“We have been fortunate that they are not raiding our fields. We are going into the tomato season, and our farmers need the immigrants. They are very hard working and we need them,” said Wallace.

Also, the construction work is about to begin on Florida City Place. The city is finalizing some items, but soon, there will be a groundbreaking, and much-needed housing will be built.
