Zoo Miami welcomed a female Addra gazelle calf after a pregnancy of about 6½ months. The calf was born Aug. 26 and weighed just under 11 pounds during her neonatal exam the following day. Zoo Miami said she is healthy and strong.

After a brief period behind the scenes, the calf was given access to the public habitat with her parents. Her father, Stoli, is 11 years old and came from the San Diego Zoo. Her mother, Calypso, is nearly 11 years old and came from the St. Louis Zoo. The calf is the 87th Addra gazelle born in Zoo Miami history.

Also known as Dama gazelles, Addra gazelles are the world’s largest and tallest gazelle species. Fewer than 400 are estimated to remain in the wild, with illegal poaching and habitat loss among the biggest threats.

Species at a Glance: Addra gazelles are native to small pockets of the Sahara and semi-arid regions of Chad, Niger and Mali.
