When the Mexican American Council (MAC) was founded with a mission "to ensure that every farmworker child is provided access to a quality education, the arts, and technology for a brighter future in South Florida," they did not perhaps realize the literally thousands of lives they would impact over time.
Eddie Garza, second generation Chief Executive Officer (CEO), has consistently built up the non-profit on the firm foundation established by his parents, Cip and Marie Garza. He takes pride in being able to offer staff positions with young people who have attained their degrees or skills through MAC's College and Career Readiness Program.
While the Director of Finance and Strategic Initiatives, Jose Gonzalez, came instead from a friendship at the University of Miami, his hiring brings a new dynamic to the thriving organization. A U.S. Navy veteran, still in the Reserves, Gonzalez completed his Masters Degree and was comfortably working, having kept in touch with Garza even though they went separate ways after graduation.
He entered the Navy at a later age than many. He drew on harrowing experiences of his childhood as he worked with a S.E.A.L. unit combatting narco-terrorism and human trafficking. Daily violence raged in his native Colombia in the 1980s, and his single mother and aunt were determined to make their way out. Finding refuge in this country was difficult; once arrived, it was hard work cleaning houses. They were grateful, though, and Gonzalez understood his family's sacrifices. The first to attend college, he admired what MAC accomplished.
"Being in MAC is rewarding and I can let kids know if I could do what I have done, they can too." Gonzalez may prefer not to be in front of the camera, but he was named one of Brickell Magazine's 2025 Go-Getters. "Located in one of the world's most diverse and dynamic business centers, Miami Herbert Business School offers unparalleled opportunities to learn, engage, and grow. The graduates are thought leaders who transform business, scholarship, and lives. To celebrate them, we partnered with the school to present our annual ‘Go-Getters’ feature, honoring current students and recent grads, as well as their successes, hopes, and dreams." Garza and Gonzalez have several ideas for enhancing current programs and reaching out for new opportunities. In keeping with the goal of finding the right career path for students, whether in college, the trades, serving in the military, or entrepreneurship, MAC is now associated with CBT Technology Institute, where the Cutler Bay campus specializes in certification for A/C Refrigeration Technicians and Electricity Technicians.
"The programs at the Cutler Bay Campus of CBT Technology Institute reflect the job opportunities available in the community. The programs offered at CBT Technology Institute are designed to guide students through a smooth learning process that will help them acquire theoretical and hands-on knowledge that they can use to start their new career."
Indeed, in guiding community students the MAC College and Career Readiness Program is described on their website: "Ready for life after High School? Join the CCP and empower and enlighten yourself through thought provoking Workshops. Discover new careers and futures through exciting Career Exploration Days! Are you ready for more than just help with homework? This program is open to High School students at Homestead High School, South Dade High School, Miami Community Charter School, and Robert Morgan Educational Center."
Activities and support occur throughout the year, and each summer, as MAC runs additional sessions that include internship opportunities and continuing to prepare for college or other careers. For those graduating this Spring from various institutes, the 41st Farmworker Student Recognition Ceremony will be held Saturday, May 10th, 2024, at 7:00 pm, at the Homestead-Miami Speedway Champions Club.
Generous sponsors ensure the traditional, heartfelt ceremony is memorable for the students and their families. MAC headquarters is located in Homestead at 381 N Krome Ave Unit #107; Tel: (786) 243-2328. Follow them on https://www.facebook. com/mexamcouncil to learn more.
