Exec. Director Lisa Headshot

This week, I had the opportunity to meet newly appointed Miami-Dade County Public Schools Superintendent Rafael Villalobos.

He spoke about the challenges AND opportunities facing our schools today. In listening to his message, one thought stayed with me: What happens in our classrooms does not stay in our classrooms. It impacts everything!

Miami-Dade Public Schools opened the school year with nearly 19,000 fewer students than at the end of last year — and about 31,000 fewer than two years ago. Although the district says these early numbers are preliminary, more than two dozen schools, including some in South Dade, have been identified for reassessment or review. Superintendent Villalobos has paused the process to allow for additional review, community input and greater transparency.

Although these are education statistics, they are also workforce and economic-development statistics. Our students are South Dade's future healthcare professionals, aviation technicians, skilled tradespeople, entrepreneurs, educators and business leaders. If we want companies to grow here, families to remain here and new industries to invest here, we must also be intentional about building the talent pipeline that's here today.

And this cannot be the responsibility of our schools alone! Business, education, government and community organizations each hold a piece of the solution. The real opportunity is bringing those pieces together.

At the South Dade Chamber, we believe it is time to deepen that conversation. So, rather than simply asking, "What is happening with our schools?" I challenge us to ask a bigger question:

What kind of South Dade are we preparing our young people to inherit — and what are we actually doing today to help build it?

In the coming weeks, the Chamber will be listening to employers, educators, workforce partners, government leaders and community organizations about where the gaps exist and where greater collaboration can make a difference.

Because the future of South Dade's economy is not years away.

IT'S SITTING IN OUR CLASSROOMS TODAY!
