Westminster Christian product Anthony Vilar has enrolled at the University of Miami passing on signing with the Chicago Cubs, who selected him in the 37th round.

Vilar, a shortstop who hit .457 with 12 home runs and 44 RBIs as a senior for the Warriors, began classes at Miami on Monday.

“It’s a new start, a new experience, but everyone is staying together,” Vilar said. “Most of the incoming freshmen have the same classes so we’re on campus together and it’s been great so far.”

The Cubs brought Vilar in for a workout before the draft. He toured Wrigley Field and took part in batting practice highlighted by a home run to right field.

“It was an awesome feeling,” Vilar said. “A great feeling.”

Although signing a pro deal is every player’s dream, Vilar passed on the opportunity to fulfill another dream of his—being a Hurricane.

Vilar officially made the dream a reality this week. He is taking two classes in Summer Session B before a full load in the fall semester as a business major.

He has been balancing his time between school and offseason workouts with the team.

His day generally begins with workouts at 7 a.m. for two hours. Then, he gets ready for his 10 o’clock class and grabs a bite to eat. At 11:40, he is at his second class until 1.

Although he has a substantial time commitment with his responsibilities at UM, which will include study hall periods beginning next week, Vilar finds time to take swings in the batting cage to continue to work on his craft. He hits with his old batting coach or at a friend’s house.

Being a college athlete can be challenging, but something Vilar is already embracing.

“It’s always been my dream to go to UM so starting this next experience is new and it’s tough, but it’s what I wanted my whole life and I’m going to enjoy it,” Vilar said.
