Morgan Shepherd gives the term, “Racing to the Finish” a new meaning. The 77-year-old hailing from Ferguson, North Carolina, has been a race car driver since 1967. This past weekend Shepherd was the oldest driver to attempt to qualify for the Ford EcoBoost 300 at the Homestead-Miami Speedway.

Shepherd is both an owner and driver in the Xfinity Series and has had 15 wins over his career. He has also started in the Camping World Truck and Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series and won 4 times in that series.

A roller skating driver who often takes off on his skates on pit row, Shepherd is quite a

character. He still skates to this day.

Shepherd is not supported financially by the big companies. He stated,

“I don’t have sponsors, so everything is on me.”

In the past, Shepherd has stated that his strong faith may play a part in sponsors shying away. “You don’t see many cars with a cross on the hood.”

“On February 23, 1975, I was saved. I accepted Jesus at 8:30 at night. I had been to church all my life, but I would drink and come home and not even know where my money went. I got down and prayed and accepted Jesus into my life.”

The ministry of the Morgan Shepherd Charitable Fund is his major passion besides racing. The charity raises funds for PARC, a private non-profit organization that provides handicapped adults with jobs and every-day life training.

When asked who he hoped would win Saturday’s race if he couldn’t, Shepherd replied, “So I truly hope Christopher Bell. He is a strong Christian young man.”

Unfortunately, plagued by an oil leak, Shepherd’s car failed to qualify.

Just how long can a driver stay in the game? Shepherd stated, “I’ll be racing as long as the good Lord let’s me walk on this earth.” Morgan is certainly “racing to the finish.”
