Homestead has been inside the top eight for the 8A playoff race throughout the season, but their postseason hopes took a big hit in the second-to-last game.

Homestead’s comeback attempt came up short in a 14-11 loss to Edison dropping the Broncos to 5-4 and out of the top eight.

“It was very disappointing,” head coach Ahmad Ward said. “We knew we could have clinched if we won, but with this loss we’re not totally out of it, but the odds are against us.”

Homestead, currently ninth, will look to beat Ferguson (2-7) in its final game on Friday and look to improve its overall power ranking average to jump ahead of either North Miami (5-4) or Coral Gables (5-4) in Region 4 while holding off Southwest (6-3).

“We’ve got to try to finish the season 6-4 and then just see what

happens from there,” Ward said.

Homestead trailed 14-3 in the closing minutes off the fourth quarter before Trema Baptiste connected with Brandon Pierre for a 40-yard touchdown. Pierre ran in for the 2-point conversion pulling the Broncos within 14-11 with 3:15 left.

The Broncos then recovered the onside kick at the Edison 40, but were only able to pick up two yards before turning the ball over on downs.

“That was looking kind of good,” Ward said after recovering the kick. “Those are the things we practice for. We just kept digging deep and I thought we had something. Things were working. Obviously Edison was more prepared than we were.”

Homestead got the ball back with 22 seconds at their own 38 with no timeouts left and were unable to cross midfield to lose the game to a struggling Edison (3-6) squad, which was led by quarterback Karon Johnson, who rushed for 120 yards and two touchdowns on 27 carries.

“That quarterback power was just working and then towards the end we kind of slowed it down, but it was too late,” Ward said.

Baptiste completed 13 of 26 passes for 156 yards and a touchdown. Rahmod Smith caught four passes for 44 yards, but was held without a grab after the break.
