A point of emphasis during preseason practices has been improving the team’s conditioning as Coral Reef aims for its first playoff appearance since 2011.

“Last year, if you look at our record at 2-7, it doesn’t look like we were a very good ball club, but we had a lot of times where we were just gassed in the fourth quarter,” head coach Joseph Petisco said.

Petisco and his staff are hoping improved stamina will help on both sides of the ball especially with an offense looking to run the Wing T after running a spread zone last year.

Senior Andres Ruiz-Sanchez takes over at quarterback and will be expected to run the ball in addition to handing it off to sophomore Keyno Dean while junior Milton Calafell aims to carve out a niche in the offense, which hopes to get senior Johnny Simon back late in the season after tearing his ACL in May.

“We need that fullback, quarterback, and two wing guys to be tough guys between the tackles and also have the wheels to get outside and those guys have been great,” Petisco said.

Senior safety Christopher Perez and senior cornerback Dajon Clark are part of the team’s strength on defense.

“My secondary is where we’re strong,” Petisco said. “I’m not going to have problems on third down with dialing up blitzes and playing man across the board. I feel confident in that.”

Senior linebackers Dillon Ford and James Bunyan give the Barracudas some athleticism and experience on defense with

juniors Ronnie Williams, Jason Don, and sophomore Andrew Matthews expected to be key contributors.

Senior kicker Daniel Henderson gives the team reliability on

special teams.
