Daniel Ramirez ran into the end zone for a 65-yard touchdown on Coral Reef’s second play of the game.

It provided a spark, but North Miami Beach provided to be too much as the Barracudas lost 38-15.

“A coach that I had before told me that football is a game of X’s and O’s, but if their X’s are faster than your O’s, then you know,” Coral Reef head coach Joseph Petisco said. “We were a little but outmatched athletically, but I think we played tough,”

The Chargers (1-1) responded after Ramirez’s long touchdown run by scoring the game’s next 22 points.

However, junior Milton Calafell reeled off a 44-yard touchdown run to pull Coral Reef (1-1) within 22-13 with 2:10 left before half.

The Barracudas then blocked a punt through the end zone to trail just 22-15 at the break.

“Coming into the second half we were down, but we were hyped up,” Calafell said. “We were thinking we were going to get this. Everyone was hyped up in the locker room.”

Momentum appeared to be with the Barracudas, but North Miami Beach had two more touchdown runs in the third quarter to build a 38-15 lead and Coral Reef was unable to get anything going in the second half.

“The difference was all of the penalties,” Calafell said.

North Miami Beach’s David Alize led the way with 142 yards and three touchdowns on 15 carries while Jakari Dozie threw for 81 yards and a score and added 32 yards on the ground.

Ramirez and Calafell’s big plays accounted for 109 of the Barracudas’ 199 yards of offense on the day.

Coral Reef will aim to bounce back at Miami Beach on Friday.
