Demetrius Burns found Frank Ladson for 54 yards on his first pass of the game.

It helped set the tone for a strong first half.

Burns made his debut with South Dade after transferring from Everglades Prep passing for 277 yards and a touchdown to help lead South Dade to a 14-6 win over Coral Gables in a season-opening win last week at Tropical Park.

“I loved the feeling,” Burns said. “It’s better than where I was.”

Burns completed 15 of 25 passes and threw a 1-yard touchdown pass to Ladson for an early 7-0 lead.

Najeh Baker, who caught seven passes for 89 yards, scored on a fake field goal serving as the team’s holder before rushing into the end zone for a 6-yard score for a 14-0 lead in the second quarter.

Coral Gables cut the deficit to 14-6 before halftime.

Burns completed his first six passes and 11 of 15 for 198 yards in the first half.

“They weren’t really running with our receivers,” Burns said. “They were giving us what we wanted.”

The Buccaneers (1-0) finished with 335 yards of total offense.

“We did good, but we could have done better,” Burns said. “We had a lot of drops. We’re going to pick it up next week.”

Ladson had three catches for 98 yards and a score while Roderick Grissom led the ground game with 71 yards on six carries.

Jaiden Francois led the Buccaneers’ defense with two nterceptions while Terrell Battle had two sacks in holding Coral Gables to 200 yards of total offense.

“It’s about where I expected,” head coach Nate Hudson said. “Some of these things we’ve seen in practice we’re not really surprised about, but I saw a lot of positive things that we can build off of. We talked about running the football and in areas we did attack, we got some holding penalties, we’ve got to work on the conditioning a little bit, but I’m pretty pleased with where we are. We left some points on the board and defensively we had some mental breakdowns and fatigue kicked in a little bit, but ultimately at the end they held them to six points and that’s all we can ask.”

With South Dade clinging to a lead late, the Buccaneers faced a 3rd-and-33. But, Justin Smith picked up 15 yards on a run, Trevonte Gilmore drew a personal foul penalty at the end of the play, and Coral Gables jumped offsides giving South Dade a first down. Coral Gables eventually got the ball back in the final minute, but were unable to cross midfield and Francois intercepted a pass to seal the win.

South Dade will play Southwest (1-0) on Friday at 7:30 p.m. in the first of three-game stretch at Harris Field.
