I just cannot believe how this world has changed.  I just cannot believe how much our local area has changed and unfortunately, not always for the good.   Every once in a while a story with some good news may appear in the news but that is a rare occurrence.

This past Monday...start of a fresh week...I drove to work and out west in our area on Palm Drive, I saw an old camper abandoned on the side of the road by an agricultural field. The camper was ancient looking and you could tell that it had sat on someone’s property until they decided to drag it there and dump it. Perhaps they were given a warning or cited by Code Enforcement for having the abandoned trailer on their property.  Best solution to them?  Dump it on someone else’s property!

Once I past that, I turned north onto SW 202 Avenue where I came across an abandoned boat and trailer. At times, I see stripped down boats out our way that you can tell were stolen, stripped for their engines, gps and good parts and then abandoned however, this boat was like the old camper.  You could tell that once again, someone decided to get it off their property and dump it onto the side of the road and allow it to become someone else’s problem.  The same thing happened a few weeks ago…first the boat, then mattresses on top and then someone set it all on fire!

I’m sure that sometime this week I will also come across more abandoned animals. This is a common occurrence in our area as well and it keeps organizations such as This is the Dog very busy.  Add to the animals that are dumped…the garbage!  Sofas, roofing materials and bags of trash.  Don’t have room in your garbage can or don’t want to call for a county pick-up or make a trip to the dump?  Why not just dump it on someone else’s property?

On our road, we have a large home that was being built years ago to the point that it has walls, windows, trusses and plywood with paper. This home has a smaller in-law cottage in the back also in the same condition. Evidently, the lender went under several years ago during the collapse and since that time, several other people/corporations have purchased the property. The property has sat in the same condition as it was for many years. Last year, the roof began caving in and the property owners have been cited many times. Now, for the past several years, there are two travel trailers with

people living in them on the property and all sorts of vehicles as well and I noticed on the county records that they now claim the property was damaged by Hurricane Irma.  Um...hello...these homes are in the same condition they were prior to the hurricane!  I’m sure the current owners will not try and get FEMA assistance and this is a prime example of the fraud that is so prevalent in our county today.  Why hasn’t the county done anything else in all these years?  Evidently the citations mean nothing.

When we were building our home, we had to show so much progress within a certain period of time or we could not live on the property in a mobile home.  If we did not show progress, a fine could be levied and the mobile home permit revoked.  Why is it that this property has been allowed to sit like this for years and people living there?

I just sit back and wonder.  What in the world is the matter with people? Where is their sense of responsibility? Where has common sense gone? Why is all of this happening?  In speaking with a friend, we were discussing how years ago this just would not have been allowed to happen.  People would never think of dumping items on the side of the road, thus ruining our area. People would take care of their own responsibilities and not dump it on others. A home would not be allowed to exist in this condition.  The owners would be dreadfully embarrassed and if needed, the county would condemn the premises.

Ok you know that I am known to say what others are thinking and I’m not laying blame here but, is this happening because we have an immigration issue and people come in from other countries where this sort of thing is allowed? Where they have substandard enforcement of codes and laws so they think this is normal? Oh boy...I just opened up a can of worms, didn’t I?  Or, is this the result of people losing their values in today’s society?

Whatever it is, we have got to do something.  We have got to stand up and speak our mind.  If you see someone dumping, get their license plate and report it.  Complain.  I may become know as the old bitty down the road who complains however please know that your collapsing home is devaluing mine and I have to look at it every day!

What gives people?  I would really like to know if I am the only one who is noticing this trend of “dump and run” or letting a home sit in squalor?

Speak up.  What are you thinking?
