Keeping Up with the Grands

The nine grands have been keeping Grammy and Papa busy lately. How do people do it with more? They would like us to attend every event and we want to but sometimes, it is just impossible. I keep telling them, “Remember…Grammy and Papa are old!” They don’t seem to understand that.

Last weekend I flew to Tampa as Mr. Wonderful was already there working on our home in Land O Lakes. Saturday was Grand number two’s birthday. He turned the big eight so instead of working on the house, we went to our daughter’s home and celebrated along with approximately 20 other eight year-olds. Thank goodness they love being outside. I did realize that living there will be nice because when we get tired or the noise level has hit the highest level, we can simply say our goodbyes and head to our home instead of upstairs to the guest room at their house. Somehow the grands always find their way to the top of the stairs!

Tuesday, our third grand had a big day.

It was her walk-a-thon to raise money for her elementary school’s PTA at Howard Drive Elementary. Grammy and Papa came back to Homestead on Monday but fortunately, attendance was not necessary at this event. We made our donation and she was happy. Grammy went to work to rest up from the weekend!

Tuesday was also the day that Grand

number five started soccer. She has been at all the soccer games for her brother, grand number one and her sister, grand number three, but now it is her turn. I’m sure we will be summoned to a soccer game soon!

Next weekend we are going to celebrate the 2nd birthday of grand number eight. We were informed that the party will be at the beach. OK…first of all, I am not a beach person. As a redhead who has gone gray, my skin reacts under the sun like pork skin in a deep fryer. I sizzle! Sunscreen you say? For some reason sunscreen to my skin is like slathering butter on the deep-frying pork skin! When I’m at the beach, people will look at me and say, “Oh she’s hot!” but it will not be because I’m good looking! It will be my sizzling skin. So, this Saturday, I will don as much clothing as I possibly can and slather on the sunscreen, pull on the hat and look for shade as it is very important that we celebrate number eight’s birthday!

Next month number nine will turn two so once again, it may be a weekend trip to Tampa to celebrate with number nine and then March will bring number six’s birthday. I think he will be five but don’t hold me to it…I can’t keep up!

Mr. Wonderful and I will be making our permanent move to the Tampa area on April 1st. No fooling. The timeframe has moved up a bit from October but never fear…I have already been informed that grand no. one is graduating from 5th grade in June and Grammy and Papa must be there!

All I can do is wonder how people who have more than nine grands do it? I’m exhausted just trying to keep up with them all. Of course, in between

birthdays there are dance recitals, piano recitals, choir concerts, football, soccer and basketball games, karate performances, awards

ceremonies and more to come and my head is spinning!

Bottom line, I know we will be moving but with five grands still here in Cutler Bay and Plantation, I can safely say we will be back as Grammy and Papa duties don’t seem to end and frankly, my biggest prayer is that the grands will always want us to be there for them at their special events.

We may be exhausted, but we will always be there for the grands.

(Columnist’s note…for those of you who do not have grands as of yet…just wait! You may think this Grammy and Papa are crazy but until you have grands you truly do not know just how much you can love someone.)
