Sandra Calhoun Basom, age 71, a long time resident of Homestead, passed away on May 31, 2018. Sandy, as she was known to most, was born in Greenville, NC on June 20, 1946 to the late James E. Calhoun and the late Hazel Y. Wells. Her siblings included sister, Brenda and brothers James and the late John. She graduated from Princess Anne High School in Virginia Beach, VA class of 1964 and married the late Milburn K. Basom in 1968. Sandy is survived by her only child, daughter Katie and granddaughter Sawyer, and grandsons Rownan and Finnley.
Sandy was a legal secretary for many years before her retirement in 2011. She was a lovingly dedicated mother and extremely proud grandmother to her three grandchildren. She enjoyed cooking and baking, especially with her granddaughter. She was an active member of the community, supporting dancers of Expressions Dance Company and Donna Lee Studio of Dance. And an advocate for the Miss Homestead Pageant since 2001.
She always made life long friends and rarely had acquaintance. She appreciated knowing as much as possible about people in order to find a common interest or experience. While she liked to read she was never more in her element than when she could share her own stories of family and friends. She had a great deal of pride in knowing about others and their families and also doing for others as much as she could. She had a great big heart and will be greatly missed by so many. While many lost a friend, a sister, a mother, and grandmother, she has most certainly returned home where she will be able to watch over those she cared for most of all.
Services for her memorial were held at Saint John's Episcopal Church on Saturday, June 9, 2018 at 11am.
