Homestead Enterprise - May 23, 1918

HEADLINES:

Homestead Council Decides to Have Krome Avenue Oiled. Special auditor Graham reported the following amounts left of the bond money: Street Fund $6,485; fire department fund $1,024; sewer fund $2,490 sidewalk fund $598. J.D. Redd reported that he had not as yet succeeded in getting the town hall septic tank painted but hoped to soon.

The matter of the new fire engine was brought up and J.D. Redd moved that it be accepted after thorough tests by the fire committeeman and mayor. Carried. Motion by W.H. Sykes that Oscar Thomas be appointed to drive the fire engine was carried.

South Dade Red Cross Drive Maintains Our Fine Record. Incomplete returns indicate that we will more than equal our Red Cross allotment. Hip, Hip!

HOMESTEAD HAPPENINGS:

Chase & Co. have closed down for the season. They packed 52,000 crates of tomatoes and 23,000 of grapefruit during the season just closed which was as satisfactory as it was successful.

Members of the Fort Lauderdale fire department were in town on Wednesday inspecting the new town equipment.

They have ordered a similar, though a larger, machine.

Mr. Gardner, who dropped dead in a Miami garage last week, was one of the packers at Homestead during the past

winter.

FLORIDA CITY: Mr. & Mrs. Doughit and family left last week for Michigan intending to make the trip by boat from Florida City, down the canal, up the Atlantic Coast, up the Hudson River across New York through the Erie canal and then Lake Erie. .
